I’m Josh Whitman. In 1988 I first heard the siren song calling from my dad’s electronics bench. I pored over the tiny widgets in the little drawers while my dad taught me the resistor rainbow. I have been gripped by a fascination with electronics and machines ever since.
Remaking a hand-drawn, hand-drilled and hand-soldered circuit board to change its behavior was, for a 13-year-old, a monumental undertaking. Computers had the ability to change behavior simply by changing the programming. I knew that was the career path where I was going to make my living, and in 1993 I wrote my first lines of code.
In the intervening decades, I built many systems. Through this online museum of my work, I hope to share my love of technology and perhaps some of you will hear that siren song, too.
The machine that funds the machines
My one true commercial success is my loan servicing software, Moneylender Professional. I wrote a simple loan payment coupon printer for myself in 2004. After chatting with a friend, I added (extremely simple) balance tracking so I would know someone’s exact balance if they ever asked “how much do I still owe you?” I figured it might be something other people wanted, and I put it online for $35. Thus began the most elaborate, demanding and fascinating system I’ve ever built. It's user base continues to grow and evolve to this day, new people just getting started and people that have been with me since the very beginning.
